Nursery Transformation Part 1

Before
We moved into this home two years ago and this space has always been used as our guest bedroom. Much to our surprise, we got pregnant and then had our baby boy in March of this year! The guest room has become the nursery and now that Alex is moving into his crib, we decided to add some drama to this builder’s grade bedroom. I decided on doing a board & batten style paneling and a bold wallpaper hung above it. We collaborated with Portray to create a beautiful nursery for our little one because we love their easy-to-install self-adhesive wallpaper. The wallpaper I choose is this masculine, large-scale floral print that has varying line weights adding a modern touch to a traditional print. Portray wallpaper is made with high-quality, thick, canvas-like paper. I hung all the wallpaper up myself using these tools from Amazon and I had no difficulties adhering the self-adhesive backing to our orange peel textured walls.
The inspiration
Start of Project
I started by clearing almost everything out of the nursery.
Because my walls are not perfectly straight, I used a level and drew a guide line so the first piece of wallpaper and the following pieces would be hung nice and straight.
Wallpapering went pretty quickly and the pattern was easy to match up.
Once all the wallpaper was hung, it was time to decide on the paint for the board & batten. I brought home 4 samples and narrowed it down to three options. I painted a swatch of the three contenders on the wall so I could view them throughout the day. This is a VERY important step as colors can change drastically depending on the lighting. We decided to go with Sherwin Williams Naval in SuperPaint Interior Acrylic Latex with a Velvet sheen. This sheen was new for me and it was a little tricky to use. It really needs three to four coats to get a smooth, even finish. I’m not sure I would use this sheen again for this large of a project.

I used MDF pre-finished trim in two sizes (3” and 2”) to create the look of the board & batten. I used my trusty nail gun to nail the boards to the wall and sealed gaps with paintable caulk.
This DIY was very simple and took only a few hours to complete all by myself!
See our guest bed hiding in the closet?? I took off the wire closet shelf and the whole full-sized bed with the mattress stores nicely inside!
My husband painted all the board & batten while I painted all the cubbies. Team work makes the dream work!
